Why Matherville pottery besides the fact my name is Mathers? It is in homage to my father’s home town in Mississippi. My grandfather started the general store back at the turn of the 20th century, and as all stores at the time had post offices, he applied for one. He applied to the government with a different name but as there was already that address in Mississippi so the official name came back as Matherville. Today the store is gone and the address is now Matherville-Frost Bridge rd. To keep the memory of the tiny town alive, I’ve opted for Matherville pottery.
I’ve been doing ceramics since 1999. I was invited to a Raku party in Colorado, threw my first doorstop (it was that heavy), and headed to Villa Grove. The weekend was an exciting mix of fire shooting up from reduction pots, bands playing and finally fireworks. I loved it! I decided then and there to pursue ceramics. I have studied as an apprentice under Frank Gray, and Nan Mckinnell, then started taking classes first at The Art Student’s League and finally Arapahoe Community College. ACC has the best ceramics department in the region in my opinion.
I am currently showing my work at the Depot Art gallery in Littleton, Colorado. I am a member of the Arapahoe Ceramics guild and the Littleton Fine Arts guild, and have shown as a guest with the Denver Pottery Association.
